About MACHABUCA:
MACHABUCA is located on the western end of the island of Puerto Rico about ten kilometers inland from the Mona Channel (more precisely at longitude 67 degrees and zero minutes west; latitude 18 degrees and 12 minutes north). The altitude of this 14 hectare property ranges from 400 t0 540 meters above sea level. Over 20 years rainfall has varied from 2 to 2.8 meters per year with an average of about 2.4 meters. Rainfall peaks in May and September, normally with a dry spell from December through February. The topsoil has been lost where the land has been cultivated leaving a red clay overlying a soft red rock ("tosca"). The soil is acid (PH = 4.7 more or less). Occasionally the temperature drops below 15 degrees C and with more frequency it gets up to 33 degrees C. About 99% of the days see some sunshine. MACHABUCA is in hurricane latitudes. In 1996 the eye of hurricane Hortense passed very near Machabuca and in 1998 the eye of hurricane Georges made a direct hit causing major devastation.
The principal crop of Machabuca is coffee, both arabica and robusta - one to two tons in a good year. Some citrus is produced for sale, mainlly tangerines and tangelos. |
